In 2004 Duane and Sharon Miller told the missions committee of their home parish, Christ Church in San Antonio, “We feel called to share the Gospel with Muslims; we feel called to be cross-cultural workers!” One year later they found themselves on a flight, bound for Amman, Jordan to learn the Arabic language and Jordanian culture. Over the next two years they completed the Arabic program and got used to the daily rhythm of life in the Middle East. They made many friends (both among Arab Muslims and Arab Christians) and got involved in the local Anglican parish. While in Jordan they also met believers from a Muslim background (BMB) and this caught Duane’s attention. Duane started learning more about BMBs’ faith journey into Christ and with the encouragement of his mentor, he began a doctoral program which led to his 2014 thesis: Living among the Breakage: Contextual Theology-making and ex-Muslim Christians.
After nine years of ministering among Muslims—as well as teaching and discipling Arab Christian leaders—the Millers with their three children returned to the US in 2013 to serve as AFM Mission Mobilizers. They focus on three main activities: personal evangelism among Muslims, mobilizing Christians for mission to the unreached, and teaching local Christians about Islam and how to reach Muslims, whether local or overseas.
With years of experience in the Middle East, a solid academic background, fluency in Arabic, and their own experience as student ministers with Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship, Duane and Sharon are ideal to connect with both students and adults as they share about AFM’s vision for reaching the unreached and planting churches among them.
