Western Baluch in Pakistan
Overview
In a barren homeland, the proud, family-oriented Western Baluch struggle to make a living. Regularly they must confront the decision of leaving home to work in some Middle Eastern city.
Those who remain in Baluchistan eke out an existence by raising sheep and goats, growing diverse crops, producing traditional crafts within the context of drought conditions and inadequate food, health care, and non-existent schools.
The Western Baluch who move to the cities face ethnic discrimination, but find that their basic needs are met. By grouping together, the urban Baluch can maintain some of their unique, centuries-old culture. However, discouragement and underemployment lead to extensive drug use by the young Baluch men.
The proud Baluch are of a different ethnic background than other Pakistanis and for decades, rebel groups have led insurrections to win independence from the national government. Further discord and stress are added by the frequent disputes and blood feuds between families, clans, and tribes.
As Muslims, the Baluch have little knowledge of Christianity, although the capital of Baluchistan includes a number of Protestant and Roman Catholic churches. We pray that these urban Christians will bravely and lovingly cross barriers to reach their Muslim neighbors. The dwellers in rural Baluchistan lack Christian neighbors, while foreign Christians are not allowed to live amongst them.
As we observe the Baluch people's love of singing, dancing, poetry, and fine needlework, we imagine their cultural gifts being used for God's glory in their future church.
